High-tech CLT Plant with Extraction Technology from Scheuch LIGNO
Mayr-Melnhof Holz relies once again on Scheuch LIGNO extraction systems at its site in Leoben, one of the largest CLT plants worldwide.
On a production area of around 33,000 m², the plant marks a major advance in the manufacture of high-quality cross-laminated timber (CLT). The planned annual capacity at full operation amounts to up to 130,000 m³. The complex consists of three production halls for CLT, a high-performance secondary sorting and planing mill for sawn timber, a high-bay warehouse, as well as a packaging and a loading hall. The Austrian air technology specialist Scheuch LIGNO installed three segas+ extraction systems for the CLT production with a total capacity of 370,000 m³/h, along with a further system for the high-performance planing mill providing 175,000 m³/h. The chips are transported away via two medium-pressure conveying systems with a total length of 1.3 km.
Competent advice and planning
“The overall project was the largest investment in the company’s history, and the extraction system was one part of this major project,” explains Ing. Markus Thier, BSc, Plant Manager CLT at Mayr-Melnhof Holz Holding AG. “For such a project, it is not only important to have reliable partners during the construction and commissioning phases, but also beyond that. This includes fast support in the event of failures and expert advice and planning for later extensions or adaptations of the system. We have already worked well with Scheuch LIGNO on various projects in the past. In every project, problems can arise during construction and commissioning — ultimately what counts is how these challenges are handled to bring the project to a successful conclusion. And in this respect, we have been, and continue to be, very satisfied with Scheuch LIGNO.”
Noise protection, energy efficiency & performance reserves
“There were various requirements on our side for this project, including soundproofing, energy efficiency, and performance reserves for later expansions,” stresses Ing. Markus Thier. For all extraction systems, the return air is used for the supply of fresh air. This is done in each case via axial fans. The systems are controlled via switch cabinets manufactured and programmed by Scheuch LIGNO. GreCon spark extinguishing systems are used both in the CLT plant and in the planing mill.
Medium-pressure conveying systems transport material over 1.3 kilometres
The extracted material from the three CLT production halls is transported by a medium-pressure conveying system over a length of 450 metres to a new intermediate silo at the planing mill. To cover peak loads, up to 15 tonnes can be moved in the process. The material from the planing mill is also collected in this intermediate silo and then conveyed further by another medium-pressure system over 850 metres to the silo at the pellet plant. This conveying system is designed for a maximum of twelve tonnes of material.
One of the most significant companies in the European wood-processing industry
The roots of Mayr-Melnhof Holz date back to 1850. Today, with its headquarters in Leoben, Austria, the company is one of the largest and most significant players in the European wood-processing industry, a market leader in the glulam segment, and a driving force in the advance of cross-laminated timber as the building and material of the future. Around 1,640 employees in Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Sweden refine this valuable raw material into timeless and modern wood products. More information at www.mm-holz.com.
„In the planning phase, good solutions were developed jointly to meet the requirements, which were ultimately implemented to our satisfaction.“
